We understand that deciding to leave your home can be a difficult decision. Our aim is to make the process as clear, supportive and straightforward as possible.
This page explains how to end your tenancy with Sanctuary Scotland, what you need to do, and what will happen once you give notice.
What you need to do
If you decide to move out of your Sanctuary Scotland home, you must give us notice to end your tenancy.
The quickest and easiest way to do this is by completing our online termination request form below. Once the form is submitted, a member of our team will review your request and contact you to confirm the next steps.
If you are unable to complete the online form or need support, please contact us by telephone on 0808 168 3478 and we will help you.
Giving notice
Your notice must be provided in writing and should include:
- Your full name(s), as shown on the tenancy agreement
- The address of the property
- The date you wish your tenancy to end
- A forwarding address
- A contact telephone number and email address
If you have a joint tenancy, all tenants named on the tenancy agreement will need to sign the notice.
If you have a joint tenancy and only one tenant wishes to leave while another tenant remains in the property, this is known as a joint to sole tenancy change. If this is what you want to do, please visit our Remove someone from your tenancy page for more information.
Notice period
Most Sanctuary Scotland tenancies require at least 28 days’ notice, but you should always check your tenancy agreement to confirm the notice period that applies to you.
Your notice period will begin once we have received a correctly completed online termination request form with all required information. If we need any further details, we will contact you. Once your notice has been accepted, we will confirm the date your tenancy will end.
If you later wish to change or withdraw your notice, please contact us as soon as possible and we will discuss this with you.
What we will do
Once your notice has been accepted, your Housing Officer will contact you to arrange a visit to your home. This visit allows us to:
- See the condition of the property
- Discuss arrangements for moving out
- Explain what is expected before you leave
- For Mid-Market Rent (MMR) properties, take an inventory and discuss any deposit arrangements
- Confirm how and when to return your keys
You are responsible for paying rent and any other charges up to the end date of your tenancy.
Leaving the property
When your tenancy ends, the property must be left:
- Empty
- Clean
- In good repair
- Free from rubbish
This should be in line with your tenancy agreement, unless we have agreed in advance that certain items can be left behind. You should also remember to:
- Contact your utility providers
- Inform your local council tax office
- Notify any benefits agencies, if applicable
- Take final meter readings
- Consider redirecting your mail
