Aids and adaptations in your home

What are aids and adaptations?

We want you to be able to enjoy your home and live comfortably. If you, or a family member, find it difficult to access parts of your home, we may be able to help make things easier for you.

Your home may be able to be adapted to make it easier for you to live independently. An aid or adaptation could be as small as a hand rail or lever tap, or as big as a ramp to enable easier access to your property or a wet room to make it easier to shower.

Aids and adaptations are available to all residents living in Sanctuary’s rented properties who:

  • Have a long-term condition.
  • Struggle with everyday activities.
  • Are restricted by their environment.

What do I do if I think I might need an adaptation?

For major adaptations you need to be assessed by an Occupational Therapist or acquire the professional opinion of another agency. This can be arranged by contacting your local council’s social work department or your GP.

A member of staff will discuss your request with you and tell you how long it will take. We aim to complete small changes within 28 days. Big changes, like the installation of a level-access shower, may take longer.

Approved works are carried out by our own trades colleagues or a contractor.
